Looks at the social, cultural, and political forces which shaped the author's approach to the novel, and explores its themes of good and evil, racial intolerance, democracy, and our relationship to nature. Also reveals its impact upon 19th century society, the manner in which Melville's experiences as a young seaman influenced his story, and how 'Moby-Dick' has influenced American writers today. Features include : a video index (video chaptered into navigable units); thematic units (key curricular video segments that include pre- and post-viewing questions in a format ideal for integration into classroom instruction) ; a slide show (a slide show overview of the video - a great way to introduce a unit of instruction), and references to teacher resources.
